McKenzie O'Sullivan was in a dark place in life. Each day she lived in survival mode not knowing if her husband Wayne would come home in a good or bad mood. Everything she hoped and dreamed of was taking away by the one man that promised to love her until death do them part.
Everything happens for a reason, right? What would you do if you had no way out, and nothing to lose? Would you take a chance and risk it all? A personal classified changed McKenzie's life forever, but does she really know who "is" behind the screen? Or is it just her loneliness believing everything written on her shattered heart.
Chapter One
McKenzie O’Sullivan suffered in silence, with no one to talk to. Even if she did, she couldn’t share what was happening in her own home, with the fear of repercussion from her husband. As she stared at the computer screen, her entire body ached from the night before. It was hard for her to open and close her right eye. The computer screen reflected the black and blue on her brown skin. She continued searching the Craigslist classifieds for a new dining room set. Wayne had thrown two of the fancy mahogany chairs at the wall, shattering them into pieces, after he was done slapping her around. McKenzie fought back like she always did, but in the end he always overcame her with his strength.
Before he left to work in the morning, he demanded she find the cheapest set online. She massaged the side of her face where her husband’s fingers were still imprinted on her skin. Her right eye was still red-rimmed from the impact; as usual, it would be back to normal in a few days.
How did I end up here? she asked herself as she explored the site. Once, McKenzie had a great job with a promising future ahead of her, and now she was practically stuck, living in a big, empty house with a man that promised to love her. He’d just forgotten to mention that he liked to beat women. She’d managed to throw a flowerpot at his head, missing him by a few inches, and he’d then given up on attacking her.
McKenzie should’ve seen the signs multiple times before she’d said “I do”. He’d pushed her a few times when they were dating. In her mind it was only a shove; he never really hit her. Wayne loved her, or so she thought. He made empty promises, like: I’m going to change for the better, or, give me a chance. Things did change for the best after they were married, until two years later, when he lost his job. She became the sole provider and he couldn’t handle it. Wayne began drinking liquor on a daily basis.
The abuse began with words, putting her down, and then it turned physical when she threw the fact that she, not he, paid for everything in their home. McKenzie remembered the day just like it was yesterday, instead of two years ago. Wayne had slapped the shit out of her, making her tumble over the leather couch. She couldn’t believe he’d just hit her. McKenzie remembered the tears stinging her eyes.
Wayne stared at her while she was on the floor. “It’s your fucking fault.” He pointed his index finger at her. “Why would you throw the fact that I can’t get a fucking job in my face? You’re shit without me, bitch!”
She smirked, glaring back at her husband as she took a deep breath. McKenzie stood, and balled her fist so hard that her nails dug into her palm. “I’m more than you’ll ever be.” She took a couple of strides and swung her fist with everything she had, and punched him in the jaw.
That was the beginning of the downfall of their marriage. After that, he controlled her with fear. Wayne would always swear that he wouldn’t hit her again, and blamed his actions on the alcohol—or her—every time. He promised he would change every single time, and her dumb ass believed him. Wayne even went to counseling; however, that didn’t last long.
Two weeks later after the first time he hit her, he was offered a great job at a very prestigious accounting firm. He was making twice as much as her. He convinced her to quit her job, and she regretted that decision the second she turned in her resignation letter. It had been a year since she’d had a job, and when she decided to submit a job application to a major credit union, behind Wayne’s back, she found out she was pregnant. McKenzie recalled how she’d felt when the doctor gave them the news. She’d cried for days, and it wasn’t tears of joy. She didn’t want a baby living the life that she was. McKenzie wanted out, and this news could only set her back.
McKenzie kneaded her shoulder, and continued searching the site and as she sang I’m Not Your Superwoman: by Karen White. As she clicked multiple times, she ended up in the personals section and curiosity got the better of her. She began searching through all the different ads, just to kill some time. Her eyes opened wide when she ticked on one of the men seeking women, and a picture of a man’s penis popped up, making her giggle.

McKenzie was curious to what NSA and FWB was and she googled it and smirked when she saw what it meant. No string attached and friends with benefits, she shook her head and continued looking at the ads. Some made her gag and others made her chuckle. She then clicked on the platonic section of the personal ads.

FRIENDS ONLY STRICTLY PLATONIC! — m4w
Do women really believe in platonic friendship? I would love to find one who does. Pure, platonic friendship. Nothing more. I could use more lady friends in my life. I need to balance out the interaction and conversations with the fellas. I need that other half and perspective. I feel an emptiness and void in my life. I’ve learned that its not love that I’m aching for, its for good genuine friendship. I’m not a bad looking guy but I’ll honestly admit that I’m not what women find “hot” or attractive, just being real about it. I’m not looking for love or relationship so I hope to find someone who can understand and look past that and be willing to be friends…just friends. Someone to talk to, listen to. I love outdoors stuff. I’m trying to live a healthy lifestyle. We don’t have to have this in common though. If you have intentions of finding love, dating or sex please do not message me. I can’t offer you that. I’m honestly just looking for a platonic friendship. I hope to hear from someone real. put “Friendship” as your subject line so I know you’re not a spammer.

Having a friend to chat with wouldn’t be that bad. You’re supposed to be looking for furniture, she told herself. McKenzie clicked on the Reply button. Without re-thinking what she was about to do, she typed a message.
Friendship in the subject line. Hi, I’m also looking for a friend to chat with, nothing more just a friend. It was short and simple. Even as she clicked on the Send tab, she had a feeling whoever placed the ad wasn’t going to answer. And no matter what, McKenzie wasn’t going to send pictures or videos of herself to someone she didn’t know.
She’d heard about Craigslist serial killers, but she wasn’t going to meet this person. There was something about that one ad that called to her. Maybe it was her loneliness, being alone in the house all day with a newborn. McKenzie had never done anything like this before, and now she was regretting sending the email. If she could only retrieve it. Wayne would kill her if he ever found out what she’d done.
McKenzie rapidly closed her laptop. Wayne was trying to control everything she did, from going out, to a monthly allowance and who she spoke to. She wouldn’t allow him to take away her cell phone, especially now that they had a baby. Her baby would always come first. Last time he hit her, she’d packed up her stuff and was about to leave when he’d threatened their son. Her heart dropped to the pit of her stomach. He threatened to take Caleb away from her if she even thought of leaving him, and she was too afraid to call his bluff.
McKenzie was worn out. She had no more fight in her. Her cell phone rang and she got up to get it.
“Hello,” she answered dryly. Wayne was just checking up on her, like he did every day, and if she didn’t answer, he would come home for lunch to make sure she was there.
“Why did it take you three rings to answer the damn phone?”
McKenzie took a deep breath. Why was she putting up with this shit? Because he would hunt you down, and take your baby from you, that’s why. She deserved so much better.
“McKenzie, did you hear me?” He shouted.
“The baby was crying. I apologize,” she said between gritted teeth.
“Did you find a new dining room set?”
“I searched online. They didn’t have anything you would like. The furniture store a few miles away is having a sale. I can go look?” McKenzie needed to get out of the house, one way or another.
“Fine. I’ll send you a cab, and put some money in your card. McKenzie, make sure you don’t go any other place except the furniture store.”
“I’m not a child, Wayne. I can drive myself.” She raised her voice. Wayne had taken her car keys when she’d had lunch with an old co-worker without his permission. McKenzie was always getting herself in trouble with Wayne. She couldn’t help expressing how she felt, even if it killed her. She’d been dying until Caleb was given to her.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me. You’ve taken a lot from me, but you will not keep me in this house like I’m some kind of a prisoner. I get it! I won’t leave you!” she yelled.
“McKenzie, who do you think you’re talking to?”
“Wayne O’Sullivan,” she said, with sarcasm in her voice.
“Are you being funny?”
“You asked me a question. I’m just answering before I earn another beating.” McKenzie entered the nursery. Caleb was up, looking up at his bear mobile spinning around. “Hey peanut…” Her little boy smiled when he heard her voice.
“Are you trying to piss me off? I told you it won’t happen again.”
“Yea
h, okay, I heard that before.” She grabbed an outfit for the baby. “I have to go, the baby is crying.” She swiped her phone screen as Wayne was still talking. McKenzie didn’t have anything else to say to him. An icon lit up on her cell, letting her know she had a new email.
I’m looking for the same thing you are. Here’s my personal email and kik. Can’t wait to get to know you.
He didn’t even know what she looked like, her age or anything. He must be in desperate need. McKenzie ignored the email, and went about her day. She bent down in pain and clutched up the broken pieces of chair. Before walking out the front door, she picked up her dark sunglasses and slipped them on. McKenzie placed the wood by the curb, and went back in. She strolled into the nursery and smiled as soon as she saw Caleb. He didn’t know what fear was. Baby boy was innocent in all this. She picked him up in one arm, and his car seat in the other, and headed back out of the house to wait for the taxi sent by Wayne. She locked the door, and waited.
“Hey!” Her neighbors waved. The couple were working in their flower garden.
McKenzie gave the woman a fake smile, and bowed her head, trying to hide the bruises around her eyes. She pushed up her dark shades.
The woman stood, and strolled down the path from her house to the sidewalk. “Seems like yesterday that you were pregnant.” Her eyes widened a bit when she looked at McKenzie’s face. “That’s a nasty bruise.” The lady continued staring at her.
She twisted to the side and bent down, trying to hide her cheek. “I’m clumsy. I hit myself with the kitchen cabinet.” McKenzie placed Caleb in his car seat and buckled him, in waiting for the lady to leave. Instead, she bent down to join McKenzie.
