She was now working on base with the Family Advocacy Program, helping military families that were involved in any type of abuse, especially child abuse and domestic abuse. They provided assistance for service members and their families involved in incidents. Her office’s primary goals were prevention, victim safety and support, interventions, and offender accountability. McKenzie’s role at her job was to sit and talk with abused victims, letting them know there was hope, and she shared her story with the groups, as well.
“Mommy!” Caleb looked up at her. “Daddy was sad when he said ‘bye’.”
“He was?” McKenzie stared lovingly at her son. Wayne had done a three-hundred-sixty-degree turnaround—or that was what he had the people around him thinking. To her knowledge, he hadn’t laid a hand on his girlfriend. Caleb was her number-one concern when it came to her ex. She’d almost broken down in court when the judge had awarded Wayne every other holiday with Caleb, after Toby was stationed out of state. She’d just picked Caleb up from the airport, and she was so happy to have him back. McKenzie couldn’t help but question him, even though her son was full of joyful stories. His happiness was all she cared about. “You’ll get to see your father soon.”
“I know. He took us to church on Sunday. Grandma was so happy to see us.”
“She was?” Mrs. Carmela was all Wayne had a couple of years ago. She hoped he never took his mom for granted. She’d seen him through his darkness.
“Yes.” Caleb chuckled.
“Did daddy ever argue with Mrs. Connie?” She was curious.
“A little, but daddy would leave. Daddy counts to ten.” He giggled. “It’s funny.”
Wayne was finally learning how channel his anger. McKenzie was happy for Connie, since it seemed her ex continued to show her his best side.
“Mrs. Connie said that next time we were going to Disney, and Daddy agreed. Grandma said to tell you congratulations, Mommy.” He swung their hands in the air, and then gazed at her. “I love being with you and Tee, too, mommy. I missed you a lot.”
“I missed you so much.” She stopped walking and kissed her son on the forehead. “I love you more than—”
“Words can express,” Caleb finished her sentence. “I will always be your little boy.” They continued down the beach to their house. Caleb’s smile got wider as soon as he saw him. “Tee!”
Toby was lying on a lounge chair, shirtless, with one hand behind his head and the other securely holding their newborn daughter against his chest. He turned to the side. “Hey, buddy, I thought you would never get here.” He carefully pushed himself up while cuddling Madisyn in his arm. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too, Tee.” Caleb wrapped his arms around his neck. “Tee, I’m so happy to be back.”
McKenzie smiled as memories from the morning she told Toby she was pregnant resurfaced.
Toby's eyes fluttered open staring up at the ceiling of their new bedroom. He rubbed his eyes making sure he wasn't seeing words that weren't there. ‘We're having a baby’ was written in blue letters with pink shadow outlining the words.
He rapidly sat up and stared at his wife and then back at the ceiling. “Kenzie,” he couldn't contain the smile on his face. Toby lightly shook her awake. “Beautiful wake up.”
“Hmmm,” McKenzie rolled over facing him. “Yes?”
“Are we having a baby?” He asked excited gazing at the woman that changed is whole world upside down.
Her luscious lips curled up. “Yes...”
Toby crawl over her showering her lips with tiny kisses, “we're having a baby...” He gawked at the love of his life. She'd been through hell and back, and survived it all. He thanked God for his many blessings. He placed his hand on her belly. “I asked God for you... It took years but he didn't fail me. And he's giving us so much. I love you... Hey baby.” He lifted her nightgown and pressed his lips under her belly button. “I can't wait to meet you...”
McKenzie combed her fingers through his hair. “You're going to be a daddy...”

Toby’s embrace tightened on her little boy. They had a bond that no one could break. “Look who’s also happy to see you, Caleb.”
“Madisyn!” Caleb stared at the replica of Toby. Her genes must be weak. The only thing her kids had of her was the color of their skin.
“Hey, princess.” Toby held up his little girl. “This is your big brother, Caleb.”
Caleb’s eyes sparkled as he looked at his baby sister. “She’s so tiny,” he said, carefully touching her head. “I love you, Madisyn.” He kissed her nose. “Me and Tee will protect you.”
“Why is that?” Toby asked.
“Because little girls are meant to be loved and cherished,” Caleb said proudly.
When she’d been pregnant, every night before she’d gone to sleep, Toby would read a different Bible verse to her stomach, and then proceeded to talk to their unborn daughter. “Princess, I love you, and I will protect you until the end. No matter how old you are, Daddy will always be there for you.”
McKenzie’s heart swelled in the love she was feeling, watching her family finally reunited. Caleb hadn’t been present for the birth of Madisyn, as he was spending the summer with Wayne and his other family. She was surprised when Wayne video-chatted to Toby and told him Caleb would be calling them every night before bed. He was so excited when he found out he was to be a big brother. McKenzie’s life had undergone a three-hundred-sixty-degree turnaround, too. This was what she lived for: her husband that only used his hands to love her and her beautiful babies. She counted her blessings and thanked the almighty for bringing her through the storm, right into the sunlight.
I will turn their mourning into joy and bring happiness out of grief.
Toby took her hand in his and she sat next to him. “I love you,” he whispered in her ear, “my Craigslist lover…”
